Frequently Asked Questions and More

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a highly effective evidenced-based therapy used that focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors. It operates on the principle that our thoughts, feelings, and actions are interconnected—so by challenging unhelpful thinking and adopting healthier behaviors, individuals can improve their emotional well-being. CBT is structured, goal-oriented, and often short-term, making it effective for treating many mental health conditions and empowering people to take control of their mental health.

What is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy?

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help individuals manage intense emotions, improve relationships, and reduce self-destructive behaviors. DBT combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness practices and emphasizes acceptance and change. It teaches skills in four key areas: emotion regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness in order to empower people to navigate emotional challenges and build a life worth living.

What is Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy?

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) is an evidenced-based therapy that helps partners strengthen their emotional bond by exploring and reshaping attachment patterns. Rooted in attachment theory, EFCT focuses on identifying negative interaction cycles and the underlying emotions that drive them. Through guided conversations, couples learn to express vulnerable feelings, respond with empathy, and create secure emotional connections. This method is especially effective for couples dealing with conflict, distance, or trauma, and aims to foster lasting intimacy and trust.

What is Parent Management Training and/or Helping the Non-Compliant Child with Emotion Coaching?

Parent Management Training (PMT) is an evidence-based therapy that teaches caregivers effective strategies to manage challenging child behaviors, particularly non-compliance, aggression, and emotional dysregulation. Helping the Noncompliant Child therapy—a specific PMT model—is designed to improve child behavior by strengthening the emotional connection between parent and child. It combines the traditional PMT behavioral strategies with emotion-focused techniques, teaching parents how to respond to defiance with empathy, structure, and clear expectations. Through emotion coaching, parents learn to validate their child’s feelings, guide them through emotional experiences, and reinforce positive behavior.
